Construction

Calver Weir is situated almost a kilometre from Calver Mill and was constructed from massive gritstone blocks, for which the area is famous, sourced from a local quarry. The Weir is 116 metres in length and forms an elongated reversed ‘S’ which is designed to minimise the impact of flood waters; it holds back 3.5 metres of water maintaining artificially higher water levels and still performs the function it was designed for over 200 years ago.

The Shuttle House is a private dwelling and the Goit is still in working order providing water to the Calver Mill powerhouse and wheels.

Inevitably Calver Weir has suffered from accumulated damage and seasonal ravages which over the years necessitated a number of repairs, some of which were successful, others not. In recent years a number of major breaches have occurred which now threaten the stability of the structure.
